How Old Is Harry Potter In Each Movie?

#1. Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone (2001)

In this first movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry is a young 11-year-old-boy who finds out that he is a wizard.

It’s in fact on his 11th birthday that Hagrid, the groundskeeper at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, informs him of who he really is — by baking a cake with pink frosting and green lettering saying “HAPPEE BIRTHDAE HARRY”. There’s a reason we love this gentle giant!

Following this revelation, Harry becomes a student at Hogwarts and meets his new friends — Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. It is also the year he faces Lord Voldemort for the first time.

#2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)

Harry and his friends are 12 years old in the second book and movie, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The plot for the second book revolves around a series of tragedies at Hogwarts involving a cat, a ghost, and a few students getting attacked and turned into stone. We learn about the founders of Hogwarts — Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, Godric Gryffindor, and Salazar Slytherin. We also learn that the legend of the Chamber of Secrets, a secret chamber within Hogwarts that no one has been able to find yet.

And we meet one of our most beloved characters — Dobby the house elf!

But, when Ron’s sister Ginny Weasley disappears, Harry and his friends have to find and enter the Chamber of Secrets to save her.

#3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

In this third installment of the series, 13-year-old Harry faces a new danger.

Harry and his friends are in their third year at Hogwarts when they discover that Sirius Black, a dangerous murderer and Voldermort’s trusted aide, has escaped from Azkaban Prison, the wizard prison.
And with dementors, the Azkaban guards, sprawling all over Hogwarts, Harry is affected in the worst ways.

Harry finds someone he can trust in a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, and learns of a horrific betrayal that resulted in his parents’ murder.

#4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)

The fourth installment of the Harry Potter series has the young wizard and his friends maturing into adolescence.

In this book, 14-year-old Harry and his friends are excited to witness a major competition called the Triwizard Tournament held between three primary magic schools — Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang.

But, when the Goblet of Fire chooses Harry as the fourth competitor, things quickly start turning suspicious, especially when combined with the appearance of the Dark Mark during the Quiddich World Cup.

And if that pressure wasn’t enough, Harry is haunted by recurring nightmares. All of the horrors culminate into Lord Voldemort returning in his physical form — a nightmare come to life.

#5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

Harry is older now and at 15 years of age has witnessed far too much misery. He continues to suffer from nightmares involving Cedric’s death and a mysterious door.

Unfortunately, the terror is not limited to the young wizard’s mind. With more and more evidence of Voldemort getting stronger and recruiting and building an army to restore his power, the Order of the Phoenix is brought back together with Dumbledore, the Weasley parents, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, and other friends.

#6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

Harry and his friends are already 16 years old and, as a team, help make Hogwarts a safe place for all its residents.

With Voldemort getting more powerful in both the wizarding worlds and the Muggle world, Dumbledore is working double time to prepare Harry for the upcoming final battle with the evil wizard.

It is also in this book that the teenage wizards start to feel the first sparks of love and jealousy.

#7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010)

At 17 years of age, Harry embarks on this most challenging adventure with Hermione and Ron. This is the final book that was divided into two movies.

The trio is set to search and destroy what sustains Voldemort’s immortality — the Horcruxes. With Dumbledore dead and no one to rely on, the task seems farther and farther away.

Harry also learns about the old tale of the Deathly Hallows, and the one thing Voldemort needs to gain absolute power.

#8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011)

In the second installment of the seventh book, the 17-year-old wizard continues with the final battle against Voldemort.

Harry realizes who their truest allies are and learns more about Snape’s life. While they lose too many friends along the way, Hogwarts fights back and emerges victorious. Voldemort is finally dead, with no way to return.

The movie ends with Harry, Hermione, and Ron — about 36 years of age now — standing at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, sending off their kids to Hogwarts.
